International Centre of Excellence for Coal Mine Methane in Poland (ICE-CMM Poland)
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe („UNECE”) has Expert Groups on Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, Resource Management, Cleaner Electric Systems, Natural Gas, Coal Mine Methane and Just Transition, among others.
Each group brings together experts from around the world specialising in a particular area.
The Coal Mine Methane and Just Transition Expert Group promotes and supports activities aimed at reducing methane emissions to the atmosphere, the economic use of methane and reducing the risk of methane explosions in coal mines.
ICE-CMM Poland operates within the Coal Mine Methane and Just Transition Expert Group.
The basic document on which the activities of the CMM and JT Expert Group are based is the „Best Practice Guidance for Effective Methane Drainage and Use in Coal Mines”.
The International Centre of Excellence as envisaged by the UNECE Coal Mine Methane and Just Transition Expert Group is to put into practice the solutions developed by the experts. The group felt that theory needs to be turned into practice and that experts should be active at sites where methane hazards and methane emissions are present.
Scope of activity of ICE-CMM Poland
Technology development:
CBM – pre-mining methane extraction.
CMM – the extraction of methane during coal mining.
