ICE-CMM Poland Hosts International Workshop on Reducing Methane Emissions

On 26 July 2024, ICE-CMM Poland organised an international workshop entitled 'Innovative Technologies and Strategies to Reduce Methane Emissions from Coal Mines' at the VSB-TUO Planetarium in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The workshop brought together experts and practitioners to discuss progress and joint efforts to reduce methane emissions, a critical issue in the coal mining industry.

Prof. Hana Staňková, Dean of the Faculty of Mining and Geology, and Artur Badylak, Chairman of ICE-CMM Poland from JSW S.A. welcomed the guests and opened the workshop.

Dr Zbigniew Lubosik from the Central Mining Institute in Katowice, who discussed the activities of the Centre of Excellence for Coal Mine Methane in Poland within the UNECE Expert Group. Doc. Jan Nečas of VSB Technical University Ostrava emphasised the role of scientific research and international cooperation, and Artur Badylak of JSW S.A. and Dr Janusz Jureczka of PIG-PIB Sosnowiec discussed the latest technologies in reducing methane emissions at JSW S.A using the REM project as an example.

After a short coffee break, the second session resumed with presentations on various innovative projects and methods. Dr Barbara Stalmachová from VSB Technical University Ostrava presented the LIFE COALA project. This was followed by a presentation by Prof. Barbara Tora of AGH University of Krakow, focusing on the potential for biomethane production in the Czech Republic and Poland. Experts from DIAMO, a state-owned company from the Czech Republic, discussed the measurement of methane in areas of decommissioned coal mines. Finally, Prof Marek Borowski of AGH University of Krakow presented innovative methods for methane drainage in underground mining.

The workshop concluded with a closing session, followed by exhibitions and a screening of a spherical film at the Ostrava Planetarium.

The event was attended by a diverse group of experts, including scientists from VSB-TUO and AGH University of Krakow, as well as representatives from key organisations such as JSW S.A., the Central Mining Institute, the Polish Geological Institute, the Polish Mining Group, LW Bogdanka, Green Gas DPB, a.s., OKD, a.s. and DIAMO, a state-owned company.

ICE-CMM Poland continues to be a leader in supporting innovation and cooperation in the field of methane emissions reduction, contributing significantly to global efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of coal mining.
